Tips to Surviving in Singapore Polytechnic PART TWO

Here's part two to "Tips to surviving in Singapore Polytechnic!"

Our Mission in SP: Get good grades and EAT ALL THE FOOD!

Food really plays a big part in our (poly) lives! :)

Here at SP, we have a grand total of 5 Food Courts (FC)  originally 6, but FC1 ceased operations in February last year  4 fast food restaurants, 1 coffeehouse and many cafes around!

We have seen people on forums asking questions such as "What foods would you recommend from Singapore Polytechnic?" on SGForums and the likes of it.

After two years (and counting..) in the school, we're here to share with you our favorite foods in Singapore Polytechnic!

Ready to be spoilt for choice?

Food Court 2
Term time: Mon-Fri 7.30am-8.00pm
Vacation period: Closing time varies

FC2 is situated at Block T1A, Near ECOasis or more commonly known affectionately to some SP students as "McDonalds". Unfortunately, the FC2 McDonald's closed down about a year back. Ya Kun Kaya Toast opened recently, to the joy of many students who crave a good cuppa in the morning  to help them get a good start to their long day, or the crispy kaya toast that Ya Kun is essentially famous for.

Apart from Ya Kun, there are many stalls offering affordable and delectable delights, ranging from Asian to Italian cuisines.

Recommendations:

Asian Delights
At Asian Delights, Curry Don would be our no. 1 pick!

The rice is soft and sticky, but not mushy. The curry is also quite thick and flavourful! At a fraction of the price (compared to many other Japanese restaurants out there), it's definitely worth a try!

Economy Rice
The usual stall you would see in most of the coffeeshops here in Singapore!

What's so special about this stall is the Curry Drumstick as recommended by a senior of ours and without a doubt, WE LOVED IT!! But do take note, it's not always on the menu!

Food Court 3
Term time: Mon-Fri 7.30am-8.30pm, Sat 7.30am-6.30pm
Vacation period: Mon-Fri 7.30am-6.30pm, Sat 7.30am-2.30pm

FC3 is situated at Poly Centre. It has undergone massive renovations to cater to a large audience. The number of food stalls in the food court have also increased from 8 to 12! 12 stalls, all just for you! You can also find Burger King inside FC3 — just head on to the back!

Recommendations:

Hand Made Noodle
Every Singaporean loves a good bowl of noodles or fish soup!

Here at the Hand Made Noodle stall at FC3, with only $2.50, you get a good bowl of goodness  minced pork, eggs, anchovies and plenty of vegetables! The good thing about it is that it's handmade (with love ha!) plus they don't skimp on the noodles and ingredients despite its popularity! Definitely good for when you need some good ol' soup to perk you up.

Chicken Talk
Chicken Talk is one of the stalls with the longest queue in FC3, selling up from 500-700 plates per day. Well.. that sentence is pretty self-explanatory right? You'll love it!! Another dish worth mentioning will be the Chicken Macaroni, my favorite dish as a child! Plus.. it's healthy! Why not give it a try? :)

Fruit Delights and Desserts
Apple, orange or dragonfruit? Just name it and they will blend them for you! With a whole lot of variety mix of juice here at this fruit juice stall, our personal favorite would be the Mango Milkshake! It was like a tantalizing treat for me and my friends after our 4-hour tutorials! The milkshake has a rich mango taste which tells us that the stall uncle was definitely not skimping on the ingredients. Give it a try!

Food Court 4 (Koufu)
Term time: Mon-Fri 8.00am-8.00pm, Sat 8.30am-1.00pm (Drinks Stall only)
Vacation period: Mon-Fri 8.00am-5.00pm, Sat 8.00am-1.00pm (Drinks Stall only)

FC4 is situated near to the Auditorium & T17. It is one of the two food courts in SP that is air-conditioned. It features a wide variety of cuisines, ranging from Thai to Japanese to even Taiwanese. You don't even have to travel overseas for them.. It's all #PossiblewithSP!

Taiwanese food

Recommendations:

Thai Cuisine
Good and reasonably priced Thai food in a school canteen? Again, it's only #PossiblewithSP!

What we love about this stall would be their Phad Thai! It isn't too oily and for people who love prawns, this is for you! Their prawns are tasty!! Another recommendation would be their Tom Yum Soup! *warning* Not for people who can't take spiciness!

Western Food
We have two stalls selling western food here in FC4, but do note that one sells only pasta!

The other stall is new but already popular with the crowd in Singapore Polytechnic! Hungry? Not to worry! They don't, as Singaporeans would say, "cheat you one" with their portion sizes.

Food Court 5
Opening & closing time varies

Located at the heart of the campus, this food court is a popular hangout for students to study, chill out and socialise.

Food options include Subway, KFC, Bang Deli — our local SP deli which sells a variety of things ranging from snacks to burgers and Starbucks (we are the only polytechnic thus far with an on-campus Starbucks). Hungry but on the go? Pop by the Cheers convenience store for a quick bite!

Food Court 6
Term time: Mon-Fri 7.30am-8.00pm, Sat 7.00am-8.00pm (Drink stall only)
Vacation period: Opening & closing time varies

Situated at Level 2 of T19, FC6 is the hunting ground of students from different schools (we have 3 schools up the hill  The School of Communications, Arts and Social Sciences, the School of Business and the School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology) and courses such as DMC (of course ^_^) for food of course. It is a truly spacious and well-ventilated setting, overlooking the SP Sports Complex.

Recommendations:

Vegetarian Food
Need a quick snack in between lessons? Need something sweet to perk you up? Fret not! Donuts are here to save the day! Don't we all agree that donuts make people happy? Furthermore, these donuts are freshly made! Come on down to grab these finger-licking-good donuts!!

On the other hand, if you're looking for a proper meal that will satisfy, order yourself up some vegetarian food (it IS a vegetarian stall afterall ;))

Noodles & Dim Sum
Another place for a quick snack between lessons!

The stall has a variety of food here from ban mian to porridge, dim sum to luo mi fan! You'd be spoilt for choice.

The hot favorite from this particular stall would be their French Toast. Fried to the perfect shade of brown... mmm. As we took a bite for the first time, it was like we were reliving our childhood. We were hooked! It's so, so good! Who would have thought that bread soaked in eggs and milk would taste so good?

Muslim Food
Love that we're always greeted with a smile when we patronize their stalls!

Good service naturally means good mood and good mood naturally makes the food taste good! This is also the only stall that sells stingray as a side dish at a pretty reasonable price! The sweet and spicy sauce definitely made it better! Apart from that.. We love their oozy Cheeseballs! Om nom nomz!

Mixed Soup
They serve the best soup around, so good that we ourselves would have a bowl more than 3 times in a week! So good that I can't even describe it. It's just that good! We love that the soup bases are very rich in flavors and the ingredients are all well-seasoned! With prices starting at only $2.50 (Prawn Noodles), it's really worth trying. You won't regret it!

Chicken Rice
Crowned the most popular stall in FC6, and indeed it lives up to its name!

Judging from its queue, you can tell how popular their chicken rice is! We love that the meat isn't too tough (some chicken rice stalls tend to overcook their chicken), and you can smell the fragrance of the rice from afar! With the chili sauce and dark sauce, the combination is perfect!

Suckies
Did you say Suckies....?

What is Suckies? Well, let us introduce to you our favourite drink here up the hill.

Suckies is soycurd/beancurd pudding in a cup, which can only be found in SP! It's different from the normal beancurd out there, as we don't eat them with spoons but suck them up with straws, thus the name of the brand  Suckies.

We love the innovative twist to the normal beancurd, plus it's convenience in a cup! Prices start from $1.80 and there are three flavors - Original, Caramel and Vanilla! Try it before it's gonnnnnnne!

Our daily dose of happiness

Think that nothing from this post suits you? No worries, there are still many others that we have not mentioned here yet for example, the Food Haven Restaurant or the Moberly Cafe. Do feel free to share with us your favorite food in SP too on our Facebook page and Twitter!

Stay tuned to our next post on the Open House 2013! We look forward to seeing you in school!

Have a great weekend!
